About Laurence

Laurence grew up in Cros-de-Cagnes, on La Côte d’Azur, the epicentre of one of the most vibrant art scenes over the last century and beyond. In 1986 her parents moved to Tourrettes-sur-Loup, which she now considers her home. She now splits her time between the French Riviera, Stroud in the Cotswolds and Elsdon in rural Northumberland.

“I was looking for something and I found it in drawing and painting”. In 2017 Laurence discovered drawing and colours. When she left her academic career in social sciences in 2022, Laurence began to develop her artistic practice, increasingly focused on landscape and communities in Tourrettes-sur-Loup, France and Northumberland, England.

Entirely self-taught, Laurence is mainly interested in figurative or semi-abstract painting, and the play of primary colours. Warm southern tones dominate her work in pastel and acrylic paint and even scenes from the north of England are depicted in bright colours. Her influences come from the post-impressionists and fauvists like Matisse, Gauguin, the British painters Paul Klee or Howard Hodgkin for their colours. Laurence also deeply admires the British-Portuguese artist Paula Rego for her brilliant use of pastel in the representation of the human.

Laurence regularly contributes to group exhibitions. Stroud Life Drawing (2022), Hexham Art Club in Northumberland (2022-2024). She has also exhibited in London, at the D Contemporary gallery in Mayfair (2021-2022), at the Pastel Society Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries (2025) and The Garden Gallery in Cheltenham (2025). She took part in her first exhibition in France in Summer 2024 in Tourrettes-sur-Loup as part of local emerging visual artists.
